SCC PTA STUDENT ELECTED TO NATIONAL OFFICE

PTA Program Named Winner of APTA Student Assembly Challenge for Second Time

A student currently enrolled in first-year studies in the Somerset Community College Physical Therapist Assistant Program has been elected to serve on the American Physical Therapy Association’s Student Assembly Board of Directors. Tyler King of Monticello was elected to serve as PTA Student Delegate at the 2012 APTA Student Conclave October 24-26 in Louisville, Kentucky. He was nominated by second-year PTA student Briana Allen.

King holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Exercise Science from Western Kentucky University. He is a fitness coordinator at Twin Lakes Family Wellness Center in Albany and is an assistant coach for the Wayne County High School Football Team. He is a member of the SCC Physical Therapy Student Organization and the Martial Arts Club, for which he serves as treasurer. He attends Lee’s Chapel in Albany.

Other SCC graduates who served on the board in the past include: Justin Kinder, Lexington; Chris Garland of Burkesville; Jeff Tyree of London; and Jeff Buis of Liberty.

While attending the National Student Conclave, the SCC PTA Program’s students were twice recognized, once for being named the “Outstanding PTA Program” by the Foundation for Physical Therapy for their fundraising efforts in the 2013 Pittsburgh-Marquette Challenge and once as the winner of the Student Assembly Challenge for having the highest percentage of program students at the conference.

Students elected to offices include: Matthew DeBole, President, University of Pittsburgh; Clarence Holmes, Vice-President, University of Mississippi Medical Center; LaDarius Woods, Secretary, Alabama State University; Joey Jackson, Treasurer, University of Miami; Meghan Simonetti, Director, Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine; Jessica Plummer, Student PT Delegate, Bellarmine University; Tyler King, Student PTA Delegate, Somerset Community College; Kaitlyn Bianco, Nominating Committee Chair-Elect, Pittsburgh University; and Keaton Ray, Nominating Committee, Duke University.

King is a native of Monticello, Kentucky is the son of Brenda Sexton of Albany and Robert King of Monticello. He is scheduled to complete an Associate of Applied Science Degree from the PTA Program in May, 2015. Ultimately, he plans to obtain a doctorate degree in physical therapy.
