Creative Writing Club wins 2013 Silver Cup
Students representing various Somerset Community College student organizations recently hosted the first annual SCC Charitable Variety Show in the Stoner Little Theater. The cost of admission to the event was a toy for a needy child, with donations being forwarded to the Marines’ Toys for Tots program. Various acts performed and members of the audience “tipped” performers, with the act raising the most funds being named the winner of the event. All proceeds were donated to the Lions Club’s Camp Crescendo – Camp Heart to Heart, a summer camp for children living in the shadow of HIV/AIDS. In total, the event raised just over $500.
The event was organized by SCC’s Gay-Straight Alliance, with eight clubs competing to be the top fundraiser. The first act was the reading of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Declaration of War Address from Veterans Service Organization President Dwayne Johnson. Other acts included: Phi Theta Kappa, singing a Christmas medley; the Creative Writing Club, reading of the original short story, Chocolate Drops; the Multicultural Club, performing La Machina Musical; Speak Up Somerset Debate Club delivering a dramatic reading from The Hobbit; the Martial Arts Club, delivering a martial arts demonstration; the Anime Club, performing the Pon Pon Dance; and the Gay-Straight Alliance, singing Seasons of Love from the Broadway musical Rent.
The act raising the most money and winner of the event was the Creative Writing Club’s reading of the original short story, Chocolate Drops, performed by April Robinson. Robinson is the daughter of Linda and Larry Robinson of Tyner and is majoring in nursing. She attended Tyner Elementary and Middle Schools and the Annville Christian Academy in Jackson.
“We are really trying to emphasize the value of student participating in extracurricular events,” states Student Government Association sponsor, Dr. Ron Meade. “So much can be learned from participating in campus and community events and I believe these lessons are at least as valuable as those learned in the classroom.”
