SCC Participates in Free Health Screens at Kentucky Special Olympics State Games; Wins College Participation Award

SCC students and PTA Program faculty recently participated in free health screens at the Kentucky Special Olympics.  Participants included: Katie Linville, Mount Vernon; Breanna Warner, Hustonville; Dr. Steve Hammons, PTA Program faculty member; Tyler Storie, Byrdstown (TN); B.J. Hart, Mount Sterling; Samantha Grubb, Barbourville; Rachael Adams, Falmouth; Courtney Carpenter, Kings Mountain; Jason Campbell, Somerset; Donna Mosby, Burkesville; Emily Reddington, Mount Vernon; Amy Adcox, Somerset; Brittany McKee, Whitley City; and Claudette Prather, PTA Program faculty member.
Somerset Community College students, graduates and faculty members recently participated in assisting with free health screens at the Kentucky Special Olympics State Games on EKU’s campus in Richmond.  The group assisted in obtaining strength, range of motion, balance and endurance data about patients and provided education to athletes.  This is the eighth year that the Physical Therapist Assistant program has participated in the screenings.

The group also received the Volunteer Award from the Kentucky Physical Therapy Association for being the educational institution with the greatest number of volunteers.  Second place was awarded to the University of Kentucky; third place, Jefferson Community & Technical College; fourth place, Bellarmine University.     

The faculty coordinator for the college’s participation is Dr. Steve Hammons, the Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education for SCC’s Physical Therapist Assistant Program.
