Wes Moore's Book "The Work" Chosen as Common Read Book at SCC

Discussions Open to the Public

Students, faculty and staff at Somerset Community College are participating in a Common Read experience this fall and the community at-large is invited to participate.

A Common Read experience is defined by SCC as a community of readers with one purpose: to discuss, communicate and read one common book each semester. This semester, those who choose to participate will read “The Work” by Wes Moore.

According to Amazon, “‘The Work’ is the story of how one young man traced a path through the world to find his life’s purpose. Wes Moore, the author of ‘The Other Wes Moore,’ graduated from a difficult childhood in the Bronx and Baltimore to an adult life that would find him at some of the most critical moments in our recent history: as a combat officer in Afghanistan; a White House fellow in a time of wars abroad and disasters at home; and a Wall Street banker during the financial crisis…An intimate narrative about finding meaning in a volatile age, ‘The Work’ will inspire readers to see how we can each find our own path to purpose and help create a better world.”

Students and classes participating in the Common Read experience will discuss themes and topics throughout the book in various classes. Community members who participate will be invited to have similar discussions on campus as well.

"This book contains compelling and timely topics for folks not only here in our community, but worldwide,” said Marci Randall, the chair of SCC's Common Read and college reading associate professor. “Moore encourages the reader to find where your life's passion meets the world's needs. I think we all need to engage in that discussion with those living near and far."

In addition, Moore will be on campus on November 6, 2015 for a free, community-wide discussion and book signing. “The Work” is available for purchase at the SCC bookstore and through major book retail stores.
