Lenville Maxwell sculptureSomerset Community College is currently hosting an art exhibit featuring sculptures and paintings from Lenville Maxwell. A reception for the exhibit will be held on September 24, 2015 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Somerset Community College East End Gallery, located in Stoner Hall, 808 Monticello Street, Somerset.

Maxwell is an artist from McCreary County who has been creating sculptures for over 40 years. His works are related to his family, his childhood in the hollows of Ritner, Kentucky and his Appalachian upbringing. Maxwell’s history of working in factories reflects in an installation of over 400 hand carved spoons and other works.

Maxwell is a graduate of Somerset Community College, Lindsey Wilson College and serves his community as an ordained Baptist minister.

The reception, as well as the exhibit which runs through October 30, is free and open to the public. Refreshments during the reception will be provided by the East End Gallery Student Council.

The sculpture and painting exhibit is organized by Somerset Community College and curated by Darlene Hensley-Libbey, associate professor of Fine Art at SCC. SCC’s art exhibitions and public programs are made possible by the generosity of donors and sponsors. Major support is provided by college’s student government association. For more information, contact Libbey at (606) 451-6811.
