Somerset Community College (SCC) students planning to attend classes at any of SCC’s campuses and centers can register now for Summer and Fall 2016 classes.
Summer classes are held in May and June and Fall classes begin Monday, August 15, 2016.
Now is the perfect time for new or returning students to register for classes,” said Tracy Casada, SCC dean of student affairs. “Many times students wait to register and run the risk of having delays in financial aid distribution or getting into the classes they need. Registering early allows us to work with those students to ensure they are on the right path when they begin, or continue, their college career.”
Hours at the SCC centers in Casey, Clinton, McCreary and Russell Counties will be changing beginning May 9, 2016.
The Casey and Clinton centers will be open on Monday and Wednesday from will be 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (EST for Casey and CST for Clinton).
The McCreary and Russell centers will be open Tuesday and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (EST for McCreary and CST for Russell). This fall, the days open will remain the same, but centers will be open until 8 or 9 p.m., depending on schedules.
“Students enrolled at any of our centers will have more assurance that classes at the centers will not be cut for low enrollment. Students will have the opportunity to take more classes than previously offered at the centers because we will be delivering more through ITV (distance learning). Students enrolled in online classes may continue to utilize computer labs at the center on the days the center is in operation.” said Dr. Tony Honeycutt, SCC provost.
According to Dr. Honeycutt, the schedules for each center include approximately 15 credit hours (five courses) for first year (freshman) students and another 15 credit hours for second year (sophomore) students during the two days the center is open, allowing students at various points in their education to obtain the general education classes needed for a degree. Schedules for other programs at the centers, such as Cosmetology, Practical Nursing and Culinary Arts, may vary.
How to Register
Returning students
Students who are already enrolled at SCC should meet with their advisor to register for Fall 2016 classes. SCC is currently running an “Early Bird” registration promotion for current students who register early. Those returning students who meet with their advisor and register for classes by April 30 will be entered into drawings for various gift cards, gas cards, apparel and prizes. To find out more about the promotion, visit somerset.kctcs.edu/earlybird.
New students
Applying to SCC is free and can be done online by visiting Somerset.kctcs.edu. Upon admission to the college, new SCC students will receive information on new student orientation. First time freshmen must complete an orientation, which can be done online, before registering for classes at SCC. After orientation, students will work with an advisor to determine which classes to take, depending on the preferred path of study. Advising and financial aid appointments will be available at each center through the start of the Fall semester.
