SCC Earth Day Photo Contest Winners Announced

A picture of Somerset’s Fountain Square covered in a blanket of new fallen snow took home first place honors and $50 in the Somerset Community College Nash Black Photography Contest.

The contest is hosted and by the college’s Fruit of the Lens photography club and was presented in conjunction with East Kentucky PRIDE and SCC’s Earth Day Celebration, held on April 17, 2016. Entries are anonymously judged by the photography club members.

Randall, of Somerset, is an associate professor at the college. She says she took the winning photo, “Snow Fountain on the Square,” this past winter.

“This is a great photograph that fit perfectly with the theme for this year’s contest: ‘H2O, Wet & Wild,’” said photography club co-president Thomas Hudson.

Thomas said that Randall’s image was one of several great photographs submitted to the contest.

Kaitlyn Whitaker, of Somerset, took second place honors and a $25 prize for her photograph “Morning Mist.” A student at SCC, Whitaker says she took the photo on a farm in Nancy, Ky.

Somerset resident Justin Flugum’s photograph of a goldfish took third place honors in the contest. An SCC student and a co-president of the photography club, Flugum says his winning picture, titled “Looking for Food,” was taken in his family’s aquarium. He was awarded a $15 prize.

Taking honorable mention honors were: Dale Burton, of Russell County, Ky.; Charlene Perkins, Russell Springs, Ky.; Ambrose Wilson, Lexington, Ky.; and Stephanie Gohs, Independence, Ky.

The Nash Black photography awards honor photo club founding members Irene Black and Ford Nashett. The Russell County couple publishes under the pen name, “Nash Black.”

 The Fruit of the Lens photography club provides a setting where SCC students, staff and faculty can come together with the community to share digital images and discuss photography. To join the club, send a request to cindy.burton@kctcs.edu.
