Shawna McAnally, a recent graduate of Somerset Community College and a native of London, Kentucky, was recently awarded the third place prize for an essay on “Why I love my college library.” The essay contest was sponsored by the Community and Technical College Round Table (CTCRT) of the Kentucky Library Association (KLA).

McAnally’s essay, along with the first and second place essays, will be published in a future issue of IN-FO-CUS, the official newsletter of KLA. Her essay was also sent to the current Kentucky Governor, Matt Bevin, to show support for libraries across the Kentucky Commonwealth.

In her essay, McAnally wrote, “My college library has helped me in so many ways during my time here at Somerset Community College. When I started going to my college library, I was really nervous at first. As soon as I started talking to the staff and getting some help with my homework from the tutors, it felt like I had met a second family. The staff has helped me out tremendously. Other than helping me with my homework, they helped me become more involved with college activities, and even broadened my horizons.”

Somerset Community College has a Learning Commons (library) on both the Somerset and Laurel Campuses. Learning Commons resources are also available at the SCC centers in Casey, McCreary, Clinton and Russell Counties, as well as online resources accessible to all students at any time. For more information, contact Julie Howe, SCC assistant professor and librarian, and Kentucky Library Association President, at Julie.howe@kctcs.edu.
