Somerset Community College Laurel Campus and the Laurel County Public Library are once again joining forces to celebrate the annual SCC International Festival. This year, events will be held at the Laurel County Public Library on Tuesday, October 9 from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. All events are free and open to the public, although some events require pre-registration. The Laurel County Public Library is located at 120 College Park Drive in London.
The schedule of events includes:
11 a.m. to 7 p.m. – Mannequin Display - see an array of head-and-shoulder mannequins featuring international designs of hair and makeup styled by Somerset Community College cosmetology students under the direction of Kay Swanner. (No registration required.)
1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. – Foreign Film - Rashomon has been described as the finest film on the philosophy of justice. In this 1950 Japanese classic, four people recount different versions of a man’s murder and the rape of his wife, suggesting that the nature of truth is not always absolute. (Not rated, subtitled, no registration required.)
2:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. – Foreign Film Discussion - Rob Spencer from Somerset Community College will lead a panel discussion of Rashomon and talk about how the movie encourages viewers to question the nature of human experience and responsibility. (No registration required.)
2 p.m. to 3 p.m. – Mendhi - Learn all about the ceremonial art of applying henna as a form of temporary skin decoration. Veena Kanthawar and Shahnaz Mandviwala will discuss the traditions of mendhi and how the henna is applied—and they’ll do some demonstrations, too. (Age 16 and older. Limited space. Registration required.)
3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. – Origami - Try your hand at the art of Japanese paper folding at this workshop led by Joe White. You’ll make several designs yourself and Joe will also show examples of his work and discuss the history of origami. (Age 12 and older. Limited space. Registration required.)
4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. – Chinese Calligraphy Workshop - Chinese native Hong Shao will lead this workshop introducing Chinese characters and calligraphy. Learn the basics about Chinese calligraphy, skills, and styles, then see how you do with ink and a brush. (Age 16 and older. Limited space. Registration required.)
5:30 to 6:30 p.m. – Greek Life - Learn more about the history, culture, and attractions of Greece from Chris Karounos—plus watch a demonstration of how to make ‘spanakopita’ and sample a taste of this traditional Greek spinach pie. (Age 16 and older. Limited space. Registration required.)
6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. – Children’s Story Time - Listen to a story from another country, then make your own Chinese lantern to take home to display! (Recommended for elementary age kids. No registration required.)
6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. – The Chattering Magpies - Take a mystical journey through the Celtic lands of Ireland and Scotland as the Chattering Magpies perform selections from toe-tapping dance tunes to heart-wrenching airs. The duo exquisitely expresses their music through Celtic harp, mountain dulcimers, and Irish flute and pennywhistle. (No registration required.)
