Over the summer, students enrolled in the Somerset Community College (SCC) Governor’s Minority Student College Preparation Program (GMSCPP) were given the opportunity to travel to the University of Kentucky for an overnight conference on college preparation. Twenty-eight students and seven adults represented SCC at the event.

GMSCPP is a program that started in 1986 and is designed to help middle school students become aware of the benefits of college and also help prepare participants to be successful in post-secondary level work. The program also encourages college graduation.

The GMSCPP program is held on eight university campuses and 14 Kentucky Community and Technical College campuses, including SCC. The SCC program offers academic enrichment activities in math, reading, computer science and multicultural education, and includes a parent workshop to foster participation in the students' academic decisions.

The SCC program is led by George Martinez, program director, and Leigh Spears, program instructor. To enroll or find out more, contact Martinez at (606) 451-6698 or georgeo.martinez@kctcs.edu.
