Earlier this summer, Somerset Community College Workforce Solutions hosted a Manufacturing “Career Craze” camp for Pulaski County middle school students.

“Career Craze” is a Kentucky Community and Technical College system initiative that allows middle and high school students from across the state the opportunity to attend a hands-on camp that focuses on technical careers.

Students who were accepted into the manufacturing camp had the opportunity to tour several local facilities. On Monday, the group toured the UGN, Inc. plant. Chris Hicks, plant manager, gave a tour and spoke about the careers available through UGN, Inc. On Tuesday, students toured Somerset Community College and learned about technical education programs offered. They also toured the GE plant. Human Resources Manager Rhonda Phelps arranged the tour and conducted a career presentation.

On Wednesday, SCC Assistant Professor Eric Wooldridge gave a presentation on 3-D Printing and SCC Instructional Specialist Scott Stringer presented a robotic welding workshop. Finally, the week wrapped up with a tour of Hendrickson, given by plant manager Devin Reynolds and human resources manager Rob Kennedy. Reynolds and Kennedy also answered questions about careers at Hendrickson.
