SCC Pharmacy Technology Class of 2014 |
“We have been preparing for big changes in the healthcare system,” said Shannon Hickman, program coordinator for SCC Pharmacy Technology program. “and, our program will be ready for the new generation in pharmacy technician training.
Hickman stated that one new major change in the pharmacy technician field, which will be implemented in 2020, is that the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board will require candidates for initial PTCB certification to successfully complete an ASHP accredited education program.
“I am very proud of the pharmacy technology program’s initial accreditation status with the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists,” said Nancy Powell, dean of the Health Sciences division of SCC. “My husband was a pharmacist for over 35 years, and I know the importance of having an educated and qualified workforce in pharmacies today. Congratulations to Shannon Hickman and Shelley Lawson for the hard work on this effort.”
This initial accreditation is retroactive to March of 2011, the date when the department submitted the application to ASHP. The program is located on the SCC Laurel Campus in London, KY and currently accepts 20 students each year.
