The following students received scholarships to attend Somerset Community College for the Fall 2016 semester, which concluded in December.

The Orwin Nursing Scholarship Fund was established in 2004 by The Mohn Family Foundation to provide scholarships to associate degree nursing students attending SCC.
Coleman is a graduate of Clinton County High School. She plans to complete the Associate Degree Nursing program at SCC and transfer to EKU for a bachelor’s in nursing. She hopes to work in psychiatric nursing and eventually become a psychiatric nurse practitioner.
Coleman is the daughter of Dennis Flowers of Monticello and Joyce Martin of Albany. She and her husband Ricky Coleman have three children: Samantha Pillar, of Lexington, Ricki Coleman, of Albany, and Coleman, of Albany.

Sidney M. Reed, of London, was awarded the Elwanda Brinkley Scholarship to attend Somerset Community College for the Fall 2016 semester, which she completed in December.
The Elwanda Brinkley Scholarship was established in 2007 from the funds bequeathed by Ms.
Brinkley. The scholarship provides opportunity to deserving students seeking degrees in elementary education and who demonstrate financial need.
Reed is a 2016 graduate of North Laurel High School. She plans to complete her degree at SCC and transfer to The University of the Cumberlands to obtain a degree in elementary education and special education. She is the daughter of Tod and Teresa Reed of London.

The William and Julia Cundiff Endowed Scholarship was established in 2008 through the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Cundiff, who bequeathed funds to SCC for scholarships.
Cornett is a graduate of Jackson County High School, where she was in the top ten percent of her class. She is majoring in business administration and management at SCC in order to have the opportunity for advancement.
“My current job at Grace Community Health Center in Gray, Ky., is the perfect place to apply my skills and to look for ways to advance and become a better employee,” said Cornett. “I plan to make my dreams come true by hard work and determination.”
Cornett is the daughter of the late Billy Cornett and Eunice Cornett. She has three children: Jordan Carpenter, Logan Carpenter and Kassidy Carpenter, as well as one granddaughter Kinsley Jade Carpenter.

The Virginia Murrell Scholarship was established after Virginia Murrell’s death in 2012. Murrell was known statewide for her educational and musical endeavors. All students who demonstrate financial need are eligible for the Virginia Murrell Scholarship.
Maldonado is a graduate of Adair County High School. She has held a 4.0 grade point average and is pursuing an Associate in Science degree at SCC. She plans to receive both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in the future. Maldonado is the daughter of Ramona Lane, of Columbia. She and her husband Anthony have one daughter, Shelby Maldonado.

The Lewis and Anna Waddle Scholarship was established in 1976 by John Waddle in honor of his parents. Preference for the scholarship is given to students from Pulaski County who demonstrate financial need.
Brinson is a 2016 graduate of Southwestern High School where she was part of the National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, track and field team, KHSAA Academic All-State, honor roll, and Who's Who of Seniors. She received an award for perfect attendance, earned the Work Ethic Seal and was given the Society of Character Award during her senior year. Brinson is a member of Beacon Hill Baptist Church. She is majoring in Visual Communication at SCC and holds a 4.0 grade point average. She plans to transfer to complete her bachelor’s degree.
Brinson is the daughter of Larry and Melinda Brinson of Somerset.

Simpson is a 2016 graduate of Lynn Camp High School where she held above a 4.0 grade point average and was a member of several clubs and honor societies.
Simpson is the daughter of Christopher Scott Simpson and Laura Ann Simpson, of Corbin. She plans to pursue a degree in education.

Kayne Hensley, of London, was awarded the Technical Scholarship to attend Somerset Community College for the Fall 2016 semester, which he completed in December.
Hensley is a 2016 graduate of South Laurel High School where he held a 3.5 grade point average and was involved in soccer, basketball, football, leadership council, gifted and talented and student leadership. He was involved in several clubs and served as a board member of Faith Christian Camp as a student representative. Hensley was also named a KSHAA Academic All-State Honorable Mention student.
Hensley is enrolled in the Welding program at SCC. After graduating from SCC, Hensley plans to enlist in the military. Once his service is complete, he plans to pursue a career in the area of sports medicine or physical therapy.
Hensley is the son of Wayne Hensley and Beth Ann Hensley of London.

Hailey Burns, of London, was awarded the Somerset Junior Women’s Club Scholarship to attend Somerset Community College for the Fall 2016 semester, which she completed in December.
Burns is a 2016 graduate of South Laurel High School. Throughout high school, she participated in the Cardinal Crazies, Mu Alpha Theta, the National Honors Society and Beta club. She graduated with honors and received awards for having one of the top grades in English and maintaining an A in four years of Science.
“My goals for the future involve me striving for my Associates in Science degree from Somerset Community College to become a radiologist technician,” said Burns. “As I attend college I work part-time to pay for tuition at Flower's Bake Shop. They have been so flexible and welcoming by working around my class schedule. I am truly blessed by the support of my family and all those who have guided me to pursue my dream.”
Burns is the daughter of Steven and Lisa Burns of London.

King is a graduate of Pulaski County High School. She is pursuing a degree in Elementary Education and plans to transfer to the University of the Cumberlands. King is the daughter of Bobby Hood of Somerset and Joy and Bruce Lewis of Somerset. She and her husband Mike have one daughter, Madison.

The SCC Academic Achievement Scholarship is a scholarship granted the top ten percent of select area high schools. It is valued at a fifty percent reduction of SCC tuition for up to fifteen credit hours. The scholarship may be received up to four semesters.
McGuffey is a 2016 graduate of Lincoln County High School where he held a 3.8 grade point average. He is currently planning to major in Biology and transfer to the University of Kentucky in 2018 to become a field biologist.
“I will get my Ph.D. in biology so I can eventually become a professor at a university,” said McGuffey. “I have always had a passion for the study of animals, and I wish to pursue it my entire life.”
McGuffey is also an artist, having art receptions in the SCC East End Gallery. His work has also been displayed at the Shine House in Somerset.
McGuffey is the son of Anita Rose McGuffey and Jeffery Watkins McGuffey of Stanford.

Combs is a graduate of the nursing program at Somerset Community College. While enrolled at SCC, she worked as a Peer Mentor, participated in the American Heart Association Heart Walk Fundraiser, the Cumberland River Comprehensive Summer Program for Youth at Risk and served as the secretary/treasurer for Jackson Manor Family Support Group. She also served as president of the SCC Student Government Association and vice president of the SCC Phi Theta Kappa honor society. Combs served on the SCC Presidential Leadership Team, was a delegate to the KCTCS Board of Regents and sat on the SCC Board of Directors. She was named the 2015 SCC New Century Scholar, 2015 Martha C. Johnson Scholarship recipient, 2015 All Academic Award recipient, 2014 Leadership Award recipient and was named to the SCC Dean’s List for five consecutive semesters.
Combs plans to continue her education in a bachelor’s nursing program and eventually transfer to Frontier Nursing University. She and her husband Rick reside in London.

Cook is a 2016 graduate of Clinton County High School where she held a 3.9 grade point average and graduated 8th in her class. She is pursuing a career in nursing and is the daughter of Kevin and Tammy Cook.
