Nineteen students recently graduated from the Somerset Community College (SCC) Medical Assisting Program, located at the SCC Laurel North campus. To celebrate the conclusion of their studies, program leaders held a pinning ceremony and reception with more than 100 family and friends attending.
Students in the Medical Assisting program completed three semesters of Medical Assisting training including laboratory skills, clinical procedures skills, medical administrative skills and insurance billing and coding. Several of the graduates are already working in area out-patient care facilities, said program coordinator Karen Webb.
After taking and passing the American Medical Technologist Registered Medical Assisting (RMA) National Certification Exam, students earn the credential of Registered Medical Assistant and are “pinned” with the RMA pin. Students were pinned by their loved ones while the program instructors read their “thank you” notes to family and friends who assisted them while in college.
Awards were also given during the ceremony. Courtney Allen-Freeman was presented with the Medical Assisting Academic Excellence Award, Maryann Pahl-Edmonds was chosen by the class for the Leadership Award and Christin Terry received the “Most Professional” award. The Registered Medical Assisting award, given to the two highest scoring students on the RMA exam, was presented to Courtney Allen-Freeman and Lesley Broaddus.
